I'm sure all of you (or a lot of you, at least) have pet-peeves about manga. For me, it's the following.

1) When the plot focuses on only one character throughout the series.
2) When the characters take forever to get to the point in a conversation.
3) Bad artwork.
4) Mary-Sues.

Especially that last one. >>

So I'm curious about you guys. What do you hate about a manga? Please tell.

1)Excessive Fan service
2)Pseudo philosophy or martial arts (Paranoia Agent and Garouden are exceptions in their respective categories, Code Geiss and Tenjou Tenge are not) yes, I don't like Code Geiss
3)Most Shonen anime
4)Yuri
5)unnecessary drama that takes away from the manga's purpose

I agree on the fan service.
And the artwork.

But I REALLY hate when all the characters look too similar. So similar you can't keep track of who is who.

-Huge amount text in a crammed bubble
-Too similar characters
-Bad art that goes with equally bad storytelling

Overly predictable storylines (IE: I know whats gonna happen by the end of the first volume)

When a manga starts to repeat itself over and over

When a manga tries to be emotional and fails

1.) Catch phrases.

2.) reiiteration (sp, i know i know) about something that happened a chapter ago. I don't have amnesia. I know what happened.

Excessive harem type mangas. It's rather sickening.

Oh, I forgot one of my peeves

The way some English translations screw up the way it sounds (IE: soul reaper sounds cheesy as hell while Shinigami sounds better, and many many others hmmsmiley.png)

I hate that too.

I also hate when the story focuses on waaaay to many characters. It's really hard to remember who does what in the story that way.

I agree 100% there. hmmsmiley.png

1. Fault of the manga-ka: manga heroines. I hate manga heroines. I used to love shoujo, but I'm finding it so hard to read shoujo now because every heroine is exactly the same. >____< They're all clueless and ditzy and have zero personality, but they attract all the hot men even though they can't do anything on their own and are stupid and weak and whine and AGGGGH. And they're all the same. >_> *getting fed up with it... obviously XD*

2. Fault of the English translators: agreed with Fenrisulfr. >_> It's why I prefer scanlations to printed copies: the names are screwed up. Anyone who's ever read Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden knows what I'm talking about. Rimudo to Limdo? Emutato to Emthatt? Tauru to Tawur? GAH.

AKA, Mary-Sues. =D I will admit that I can't stand most of the heroines for the reasons you mentioned, but there are some that are actually unique and that I like. A few Sailor Scouts (the Outer Senshi and Chibiusa, from Sailor Moon) and Zakuro Fujiwara from Tokyo Mew Mew are a few examples.

I know what you mean. In Dragon Knights, all of the spellings have been messed with and I'm not sure how to pronounce some of them, such as Cesia.

Ahh, Zakuro was cool. And Purin was pretty awesome, too. XD

My favorite manga heroines are Takiko from Genbu Kaiden, Hikari from Special A, and Tohru from Fruits Basket. I'm well aware Tohru is absolutely clueless and naive, but she manages to pull it off without being exactly like every other ditzy heroine. Takiko and Hikari can fight for themselves, think for themselves, and act for themselves, and it's deliciously refreshing.

I just don't like it when they try to English-ify things. XD I mean, I know they're trying to make it "easier" on us, but we're not stupid... and we'd rather things were left as close to the original Japanese as possible.

Indeed they are. =3

No offense, but I simply can't stand Tohru. In my opinion, she is just like every other heroine
SPOILER:
and even ends up with the hottest guy in the series (manga only).
And she's the only one who can save them all. But that's just me.

I agree. I mean, how many little kids do you see reading manga? Though I will admit that there are some, most of manga-readers are tweens to adult. I think we're capable of reading romanized words, even though some of us may have a bit of difficulty. Though in my opinion, "English-ified" names can be just as difficult to read.

No, I really don't mind, because I can see that view. I guess it's because I read Furuba before I started noticing a pattern, but Tohru does it for me somehow. I don't know. o.0

Just as difficult sometimes, and more often than not just incredibly annoying (I will never forgive VIZ for Limdo. Never.)

And really, little-kid manga, if they do read it, is typically just the mainstream stuff, like Inuyasha and Dragonball Z. And that doesn't really count. XD

1. When English copies of mangas are flipped so they can be read the Western way. If you wanna read manga, you NORMALLY wanna read it in the Eastern way! Besides, then cosplayers who only read the English version of the manga and don't watch the anime have costumes flipped. Don't tell me it's not awkward to go to a convention and see a Sesshoumaru (normally female anyway) with his armour on his right shoulder and his fluffy on his left with the kimono flaps reversed.

2. Too similar characters as well, but not from personality; from their actual appearance. Fruits Basket is horrible with this and it's come to a point where I can't tell Kyo from Hiro from Kureno, Tohru from Machi, or Akito from Yuki.

3. Changing only a few people's names to English names. Such as in Peach Girl, Kairi is changed to Kiley, but it's still Kairi in the English version of the anime. Everyone else's names (Momo, Sae, Toji) are all left intact. Why change only one name?!

4. Fan service. It does no good to be reading a manga in a public place, with some nosey person looking over your shoulder, when you turn the page and a woman's bosom is hanging out.

5. Release date so many months apart. How can I POSSIBLY wait until October for the next Fruits Basket manga?! It's too intense for that!

+Poor story (if all you have is nice artwork, make an artbook).
+Repetition in the story and characters' behavior.
+Overreacting characters (either they spaz out or are emo, no in between).
+Extremely long dialogue for very simple ideas.
+Characters that suck all the attention and/or are somewhat Mary-Sues.
+Poor art.

I also dislike when they tell the ENTIRE history of a character nobody cares about (especially when they are a minor character)

I agree. Naruto is terrible when it comes to that.
