They're just as "cheap" as textures, or C4D (that's a little cheaper) that you don't make yourself.

Reviving this topic because I could use some more suggestions aside from the 1 that was PMed to me last week.
If there aren't any suggestions, SOTW will either have a lot more freestyles, repeated themes, or it simply wont run.

Couples, maybe.

Or series based themes. Like say Naruto or any other well known series. This is an anime site after all. O.o

Okay this is a list:

~You know how graphic design has components such as blending, Composition, lighting, motion, etc? It's possible to create some SOTWs that emphasizes these components. Each component can even be one SOTW, which can lead to many SOTWs. Such as an SOTW with good illustration of lighting, or one with an emphasis on motion, etc.

~Another is landscape. It can be Urban, rural, mountaneous, oceanic, etc. Even marine Aqua-ish underwater landscapes can be done.

~Photomanipulation is also another idea. However this SOTW also should compose of two entries. The submission of an original photograph, and the final product sig that comes out of that photomanipulation.

~I'm sure this has been suggested before, but Non-downloaded brushed sigs is also a possible idea, but how to enforce it and keep it fair is another story.

~Anime stock + real photography as the background could be a theme. However, it's probably best if the participants take their own photographs which can be impossible.

~Color themes work, but can also be redundant. (Examples are like: Green. Blue. Etc.)

~I know we just did animals, but what about mythical creatures? Doing the flipside could be another SOTW. (Dragons, cenataurs(Sp?), etc)

~ Cars could be an SOTW. But I frankly didn't expect a car in the sports SOTW.

~Singers? No idea now, but you can make Sigs out of Jpop stars or American singers, etc. Could include bands of anytime. It's more like doing real people, but it's a start.

~ Magic. Like spells and such. The stock has to be like performing a spell, magic or whatever.

~This idea is inspired by Yakitate Japan!, but Pastry or cooking could be a subject of interest.

~Weapons could also be another theme. People wielding weapons, using, etc, but well, nothing bloody.

~ American type superheroes. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Flash, etc.

~ Sunsets. Illustrate something that's in a sunset. Or just the sunset itself.

~ City themes. Like if you create a sig, you'll instantly know what famous city it's from without needing text. This is different from the landscape idea though.

~ Funny sigs? Running out of ideas now, but a good sig that is strong on ideas, creates laughter and well still graphically speaking, still looks good is also another idea.

~Chibi. Use Chibi Characters from animes. Although this is like cuteness competition. haha

~War. World War II has inspired many movies, games/media. It can also be done for sigs. Although, I'd also discourage display of death/gore/blood. It's more of a display of chivalry, fighting spirit, etc type of stuff.

~I've done this at GFX battles before, but illustrating a Bankai from Bleach is an idea. (Or like Kiara's idea, specific anime series themed. But mine is a tad more specific) My friend, who took my challenge, well, is still thinking, but I think it's a good challenging thing to create in photoshop.

~Last idea for the night: Drawings. Creating your own drawings and using them as stocks. I don't remember if there was something similar, but it's an idea.
